Danny Rohl is waiting on Rangers to reach a decision about his future after Red Bull Salzburg made the 37-year-old their top managerial target.
The Austrian club have made a formal approach to the Ibrox side seeking permission to speak to the German coach, who only recently returned from holiday.
Rohl has been informed of the discussions taking place between the two clubs and is now waiting to learn whether Rangers will allow talks to proceed.
Record Sport understands the former Sheffield Wednesday boss is not pushing to leave Rangers, but is aware of the significant interest from Salzburg.
RB Salzburg are willing to pay compensation and are likely to be able to meet Rohl’s financial demands, although no discussions on personal terms have yet taken place.
Rangers chairman Andrew Cavenagh is currently in America, where he attended Scotland training alongside chief executive officer Jim Gillespie on the eve of their World Cup opener against Haiti.
The pair were in the United States for the North American Rangers Supporters Association event, leaving the club’s Rohl decision temporarily in the background.
The delay in making a final call could also give Rangers time to identify potential replacements should they ultimately decide to allow Rohl to depart Ibrox.
Former Rangers boss Steven Gerrard, who was interviewed for the role by Cavenagh previously and was in Scotland earlier this week, remains a popular candidate among the fanbase.
Hearts manager Derek McInnes is another name that has been mentioned in connection with the job, though any replacement pursuit will only be triggered if Rohl is given clearance to leave.
Rohl is no stranger to the Red Bull football network, having held discussions with the group before taking the Rangers job and having previously coached at Red Bull Leipzig.
Jurgen Klopp has also pushed for Rohl within the organisation, reflecting how highly the broader Red Bull group rates the young coach.
Salzburg are keen to restore their dominance in Austrian football, having fallen behind LASK and Sturm Graz, who have claimed the last three titles between them.
Rohl arrived at Rangers last season and reversed the damage caused by Russell Martin’s troubled tenure, guiding the club back into the title race before a top-six collapse left them finishing a disappointing third.
Rangers must now decide whether to back their coach for another push at the title or allow him to move on and chase a rebuild under new leadership.
