Rangers have seen an opening transfer bid of €2.5m, equivalent to £2.2m, rejected by Belgian club Westerlo for right-back Bryan Reynolds.
Despite the setback, reports indicate Reynolds has given Rangers the green light and would prioritise a move to Ibrox above all other interested clubs.
Manager Danny Rohl is actively seeking reinforcements at right-back after losing both James Tavernier and Max Aarons from last season’s squad.
That departure double has left Dujon Sterling as the only natural right-back option currently available to Rohl heading into the new campaign.
Rangers had already been linked with a concrete interest in 24-year-old Reynolds, who impressed throughout his campaign in the Jupiler Pro League last term.
Westerlo responded to the opening bid by swiftly rejecting the offer, with the Belgian club described as unwilling to let him leave for that amount.
Reynolds still has a year remaining on his contract at Westerlo, and the club views him as one of their key players heading into next season.
However, the player’s clear preference for a move to Rangers could place Westerlo in an increasingly difficult position as transfer negotiations continue.
Should the saga drag on without resolution, the Belgian club risks losing Reynolds on a free transfer when his contract expires in 12 months’ time.
Reynolds was not selected by Mauricio Pochettino for the United States World Cup squad, meaning he is immediately available for talks if a second bid is accepted.
Rangers have also been linked with a potential move to bring Nathan Patterson back to Ibrox, with an exit from Everton reportedly on the cards for the Scottish full-back.
Patterson was selected for the USA World Cup squad, however, meaning any potential return to Rangers would likely need to wait until after the tournament concludes.
