Rangers have reportedly agreed a transfer fee with Partizan Belgrade for highly-rated 20-year-old midfielder Vanja Dragojevic.
The Scottish Premiership club is said to have reached an agreement worth in the region of £4.6 million for the young Serbian star.
Partizan Belgrade will also retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause on any future sale of the player as part of the deal structure.
The agreement comes after Rangers manager Derek McInnes saw an initial bid of £3.8 million rejected by the Serbian club earlier in the summer window.
Partizan responded to that opening offer by demanding more money, which temporarily shifted McInnes’ attention toward Tromso midfielder Jens Hjerto-Dahl as an alternative option.
However, reports now emerging from Serbia suggest Dragojevic is on the brink of completing a move to Glasgow, with a deal appearing increasingly imminent.
Partizan’s sports director Radosav Petrovic has hinted strongly that a departure is drawing closer after the player was notably absent from the club’s pre-season friendly fixtures during their camp in Slovenia.
On the prospect of the transfer, Petrovic said: “There are certain indications and I believe that in the coming days we will have more concrete information. It is an offer for Vanja Dragojevic.”
Dragojevic has been identified as a top target by McInnes, who is keen to strengthen his midfield options as he continues to overhaul the Rangers squad this summer.
A move for Lewis Ferguson has currently been taken off the table by Bologna, making the pursuit of Dragojevic all the more pressing for the Ibrox club.
Hjerto-Dahl remains a name on the Rangers radar, and the Tromso midfielder has publicly stated he would prefer to move to Ibrox this summer, though Cardiff City and Besiktas are also showing strong interest in the Norwegian.
Any second midfield addition beyond Dragojevic could depend heavily on the futures of Nico Raskin and Connor Barron, both of whom have attracted significant interest from clubs across Europe.
Raskin notably impressed on the international stage at the World Cup with Belgium, raising further questions about his long-term future at the club.
