Luis Diaz has begun the season in sensational form, quickly becoming one of Liverpool’s standout performers.
The Colombian winger has notched up five goals and an assist in the opening five Premier League matches, with key contributions in high-profile games, including two goals against Manchester United at Old Trafford and another brace against Bournemouth.
His blistering start has been a relief for Liverpool fans, especially after a summer filled with rumours about his possible departure from Anfield.
Cascarino says he was alarmed to hear rumours of Luis Diaz leaving Liverpool
On talkSPORT, former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino shared his thoughts on Diaz’s performances, admitting that he was initially concerned when there were rumours linking the winger with a move away from Liverpool.
“I was alarmed in the summer… when there were rumours about Diaz maybe leaving the football club, and I was like, ‘why?’,” Cascarino said, emphasising the winger’s unique qualities.
“There’s not many wingers like him, where you never really know which way he’s gonna go, because he’ll cut inside and he’ll drive at the goal… he’s a terrific footballer.”

Cascarino also highlighted that Diaz has “easily” been Liverpool’s best player so far this season, a sentiment shared by many after yet another strong performance against Bournemouth. Diaz’s two first-half goals over the weekend added to his already impressive tally, further solidifying his place as one of Liverpool’s most dangerous attacking threats this season.
Contract extension rumours circulate
With Diaz’s remarkable form continuing to catch attention, there have been whispers of a potential contract extension for the winger. While his current deal runs until 2027, the idea of securing his long-term future has been floated.
If discussions were to progress, it’s expected that the deal would be finalised before the end of the year.
However, with his contract still having several years remaining, the situation doesn’t appear urgent.

This newfound energy in Diaz’s game follows a summer where he was linked with a move to Barcelona. Reports suggested that members of his entourage had orchestrated the speculation, but Liverpool have always been more than satisfied with the Colombian’s performances and commitment.
The impact on other key contracts
While Diaz has proven he is worthy of any future contract extension, there is some concern among Liverpool fans about the club’s priorities.
Key players like Mohamed Salah, Virgil van Dijk, and Trent Alexander-Arnold are all nearing the end of their contracts, and many supporters want their futures secured before the club turns its attention to Diaz.
Although Diaz has certainly earned his spot as one of Liverpool’s top performers, some Kopites fear that focusing on extending his contract too soon could overshadow the need to sort out the expiring deals of other important players. Balancing these decisions will be crucial for Liverpool as they aim to secure the futures of their key players while keeping their title ambitions on track.
