LFC transfer saga takes new twist; ‘enormous’ salary offered’ – decision to be made in 48 hours

LAGOS, PORTUGAL - MAY 31: Georginio Wijnaldum of Holland, Denzel Dumfries of Holland during the Training MenTraining holland in Lagos at the Cascade Resort Training Ground on May 31, 2021 in Lagos Portugal.

PSG are trying their best to hijack a deal to sign Georginio Wijnaldum with an ‘enormous’ salary” offer as a decision is expected in the next ’24/48 hours’.

After it seemed certain that Gini would join Barcelona this summer on a Bosman transfer, PSG have thrown a spanner in the works by flexing their unbelievable financial power, as per Fabrizio Romano.

The Dutch midfielder has been free to speak to European clubs since January and while it was hoped by some fans that he would renew with Liverpool, he is now destined to leave the club.

Romano took to his Twitter account on Friday night to report: “PSG are trying to hijack the Wijnaldum Barcelona deal. ‘Enormous’ salary offered until 2024.

“Barça still hoping to sign Gini as they have a verbal agreement reached plus medicals set to be scheduled. Wijnaldum will decide within 24/48 hours.”

I would be very surprised if Wijnaldum chose PSG even in spite of the ‘enormous salary’ that Romano reports has been offered.

He seems like a loyal guy who keeps his word and with a verbal agreement to move to Camp Nou, it’s my opinion that he will honour that agreement over chasing the pay cheque that PSG can offer.

The journalist also added:” Barcelona are waiting for Wijnaldum final decision in the next hours. Barça are already planning medicals for Gini – they still hope him to sign contract until 2024 next week.

“PSG offered Wijnaldum bigger salary, top contract – they’re waiting for Gini answer too.”

It’s a pity that Liverpool are losing their fittest midfielder given the injuries that Jurgen Klopp struggled with this season but it’s never a good idea to keep an unhappy player although he recently hinted that there is more to the story than meets the eye.

Although we have been told that signing a new midfielder is not a top priority for Liverpool after learning Yves Bissouma will cost in the region of £50million, it’s vital that Wijnaldum is replaced.

On the 30th of May, I wrote an article about how not signing a midfielder would be a costly mistake following the injury crisis at centre-back that ensued after Dejan Lovren wasn’t replaced.

I wrote: “Not signing a new central midfielder would be downright negligible even if it’s just to safeguard against the possibility of another injury crisis.”

Nicolo Barella is also a target for Liverpool but he would cost roughly the same as was quoted for Bissouma and while he’s a fantastic player, he doesn’t have Premier League experience and that can result in all kinds of problems.

It’s likely that Thiago, Jordan Henderson and Fabinho will make up Klopp’s first-choice midfield but in an area of the pitch that sees the most rotation, another option will be needed given Wijnaldum’s move to either PSG and Barcelona.
