Trent Alexander-Arnold has been defended by Reece James in the face of undue criticism following a season that saw the Scouser assist 19 goals.

The two goals the Liverpool fullback scored were also absolute screamers.

Trent scored a stunning freekick against West Ham and while the Reds lost that game, he also assisted Divock Origi's strike which made it 3-2.

But the goal Alexander-Arnold struck against Newcastle United was simply perfect.

While Trent Alexander-Arnold has never been criticised for his technique and attacking ability, his defensive abilities are routinely called into question.

He's not a bad defender but Trent can be guilty of switching off at times and could really improve his awareness but with time, I have no doubt those attributes will improve.

In his defence, England national teammate Reece James has sprung to rubbish suggestions he isn't good enough at defending.

"I make mistakes as well. I gave away a penalty against Hungary so we are both still learning our trade," the 22-year-old said.

"Liverpool have 95 per cent of the ball and he defends less than I have to. People have a lot of stuff to say and don't really know the game. Trent is a great player."

Although they're rivals at club level, it's easy to forget that players develop relationships and friendships at international level so it's great to see James defending Trent.

The Chelsea fullback is arguably the most well-rounded right back in the Premier League and while Joao Cancelo is just behind Trent in terms of his attacking ability, Alexander-Arnold and James have the advantage of youth.

Both are yet to hit their prime and so it's exciting to see how they will develop over the next few years.
