Fabrizio Romano delivers major update: 'salary doubled' + 'official decision in next hours'

Major update: Since this article was published, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that Wijnaldum will indeed join Paris Saint-Germain after Barcelona refused to match their offer.

On Friday evening, the Italian journalist reported that PSG were trying to hijack a deal to sign Wijnaldum and had made an 'enormous salary offer' until 2024 and that Barca were still hopeful of securing his signature.

With the La Liga side planning a medical, Romano's latest update will be concerning to them as he claims: "PSG are now ready to hijack Wijnaldum deal - while Barça were already planning for medicals!

"Gini now open to accept PSG proposal, salary doubled - Pochettino called him too. If Barca don’t raise their bid, Wijnaldum will join PSG. Official decision in the next hours."

After I said that I couldn't see Wijnaldum moving to PSG at the 11th hour when I covered the story, it looks as though he very well may do so.

The Wijnaldum saga is a fascinating one because as much as his latest moves have been very much public as several journalists are close to the story, the real reason for why he is leaving Liverpool in the first place is unknown.

Public opinion was that he simply wanted more money and didn't feel as though the offers made to him by the club were reflective of his worth and that would have been a very respectable position.

Especially given that he honoured the five-year contract he signed when Liverpool signed him from Newcastle United for £25million in 2016 but his recent comments suggest there is a lot more to the story than meets the eye.

He said: “I am still busy saying goodbye to Liverpool. I am still emotional because I got a goodbye that not many players got before me. Why I left, you will hear again [why I left]. It will. The club also has to do with the fact that I am gone."

He also previously said he would be 'devastated' if he left the club and so it really seems as there is at least some info missing here.

While I wish him all the best for his future, I would love to know why he is leaving if all signs point towards him wanting to stay.

When Alisson Becker scored against West Brom, Liverpool supporters all over the world erupted with joy and I seem to remember smashing my hip against a table while I was celebrating.

One thing supporters picked up on after watching his goal over and over was how little Wijnaldum celebrated, jogging over to the ruck of Liverpool players that had piled on Alisson.

In the photo below, you can the midfielder in the background as he barely reacts to a 95th-minute winner from the Reds' goalkeeper.

Now, you can have all the theories in the world and we'll never truly know why the former PSV Eindhoven didn't celebrate but I'm certain it has something to do with the real reason for his exit from Liverpool.

It's a really strange story as it doesn't seem as though there as an ugly falling out and he really seems to love Liverpool but I'm glad that he's set to end his career at the top in Europe being extremely well paid.
