Report claims Liverpool were willing to pay €88million to complete deal for right-winger

Liverpool reportedly tried to sign Nico Williams in 2019 but may have dodged a bullet as he is not worth the €88million they were willing to pay.

The Reds are competing on all four fronts this season and will take Chelsea on in the final of the Carabao Cup later this month for their first shot at a trophy in 2022.

It will come a month after they signed Luiz Diaz from Porto and failed in their attempt to sign Fabio Carvalho from Fulham.

It's a deal that will boost Jurgen Klopp's squad depth massively and should see Sadio Mane play out of his skin for the remainder of the season and could even help aid his bid to earn a new Anfield contract.

Liverpool now have attacking depth that rivals most sides in the world, with Diaz, Diogo Jota, Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Takumi Minamino, Divock Origi, Harvey Elliott and Kaide Gordon all options for the German manager.

Carvalho will remain at Craven Cottage until the end of the season but Liverpool "expect" to reach a pre-contract agreement to sign the 19-year-old at the end of the season.

According to a report from AS, Liverpool failed with a move in 2019 to sign Athletic Bilbao youngster, Nico Williams.

The report claims the Reds were willing to pay his €88m release clause at the time but the new contract he signed in 2019 raised his exit clause to €135million which is valid until 2028.

The right-winger has scored just 3 goals and grabbed only 1 assist this season so if Klopp's side were really willing to offer so much for the then 17-year-old, they may have dodged a bullet as he's not currently playing to the standard you would expect of a €135m footballer.
