Manchester United in talks to sign Liverpool's £175,000/week midfield target, the Athletic claims

Manchester United are reportedly in talks to sign one of Liverpool's £175,000-a-week midfield targets this summer.

The Reds could be in the market for a new midfielder given their injury woes but United look set to win the race for Juventus' Adrien Rabiot.

The French international has won 29 caps for his country and played over 350 games for PSG and Juventus combined.

Available this summer, United look set to move for the 27-year-old with Liverpool missing out on another midfield target.

Latest reports on Rabiot

As per the Athletic, United are working on a deal to recruit Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot.

He has just entered the final 12 months of his deal which means he would be available at a cut price and would bring plenty of experience to the Premier League.

Liverpool were linked with a potential swap deal for Rabiot in exchange for either Naby Keita or Roberto Firmino earlier in the window.

However, whilst there's no doubting his ability, Rabiot has often been a disruption for club and country with that being the main reason why he's never been at a truly elite club.

Despite playing 350 games for Juve and PSG, he's been involved in incidents such as when he was spotted partying just hours after their Champions League exit to Manchester United in 2019.

He also refused to go on a standby list for the 2018 World Cup after being left out of Didier Deschamps’ squad.

Who could Liverpool sign in midfield this month?

Transfer rumours for midfielders for Liverpool have been few and far between considering reports that Jude Bellingham is being targeted for January/next summer.

Given that Liverpool's midfield is actually fairly stacked, Jurgen Klopp is against signing a player - as he was quoted as saying to the Athletic on Friday: “We can’t solve problems we have for four weeks with a transfer. It makes no sense to us."

One player who is keen on a move and is certainly available is Sporting's Matheus Nunes - available for around £45M and would be automatically one of Liverpool's best in midfield.

Other targets have been deemed too expensive or too unrealistic such as Nicolo Barella and Marcelo Brozovic.
