Man Utd on 'red alert' over huge fan protest - what happens if the match is suspended?

Reports have emerged that Manchester United and local police are very worried about the possibility of the repeat of the violent protests against the Glazers before Liverpool's trip to Old Trafford was scheduled to kick off.

The Daily Star reports: "Manchester United have been placed on red alert amid growing concerns of another huge fan protest ahead of next week's visit of arch-rivals Liverpool."

Liverpool players and staff were confined to the Lowry Hotel in Manchester before the game was ultimately suspended and rescheduled in May and the hope is that a repeat can be avoided.

A win will be a massive boost to the Reds' chances of keeping pace with Chelsea in the Premier League title race but a win for Man Utd will boost their chances of staying in the race after a 4-2 defeat to Leicester City.

If the game is suspended, there is the possibility that Liverpool could be awarded the three points but the likelier outcome would be that the game is rescheduled for later in the season.

This was the case last season and unless United, and not its fans or the police, are the reason for the game being suspended, Liverpool will not be awarded the three points.

Manchester United will be hoping for match suspension

Liverpool are the only side in the league yet to taste defeat and will be desperate to avoid doing so at Old Trafford and will be even more motivated to show the Premier League that you don't need to spend £126million on the likes of Jadon Sancho, Cristiano Ronaldo and Raphael Varane to succeed in the league.

Jurgen Klopp's managerial magnificence has been the most important factor behind the Reds' rise back to prominence over the last three years and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's struggles with United prove that a top-class manager is still necessary even if you have players like Ronaldo, Varane, Fernandes and Pogba in your side.

That being said, Liverpool have the best player in the world right now in their side, with Mohamed Salah absolutely flying at the moment, with 10 goals and 4 assists in all competitions and two sensational solo goals in his last two games.

Raphael Varane is set to miss the clash against Liverpool after suffering a muscle injury on international duty and so a central defence of Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof will be worried about facing the in-form Reds attack given how it was violated Manchester City just two weeks ago.

From a Liverpool fan's perspective, I hope that Thiago will soon return to fitness because his control in midfield could be really useful but Manchester United's inability to dominate the engine room could allow Liverpool to run riot.
