Liverpool need to hit form 'sooner rather than later', says Milner - could a new signing help Liverpool catch fire?

Liverpool midfielder James Milner has backed the club to bounce back from the Fulham defeat and hopes they hit form sooner rather than later.

The Reds stumbled to an opening weekend draw with newly promoted Fulham in a 2-2 draw, whilst title rivals Manchester City saw Erling Haaland score two on debut to overcome West Ham.

With pundits quick to compliment Fulham for their performance, some called it a sloppy performance from Jurgen Klopp’s men.

There’s also a slight injury crisis to contend with for Liverpool, with nine players side-lined.

Milner's comments on Liverpool form

Milner, 36, has been a brilliant free signing for the Reds and has taken on the role of a squad player capable of filling in any position that’s needed.

Obviously we didn’t get the result we wanted first game of the season but it’s down to us to rectify that and bounce back and make sure we hit our levels sooner rather than later.”

“You can’t win any trophies in the first part of the season but you can get yourself into position and I think that’s what it’s always about.”

When Liverpool won the title in 2019/20, they began the season with eight straight wins which set them well on their way to winning the title.

The title was essentially secured in the 12th game as they beat Manchester City at home to go nine points clear; the club and players know exactly what a fast start can do.

Could Liverpool move for a new signing to kick off their season?

The Reds currently are experiencing a mini-injury crisis with up to nine players out injured, with Naby Keita returning to training this week.

A move for a midfielder seems the most pressing issue, given Thiago will be out for up to six weeks in an all-too-familiar occurrence.

Fans are worried about the reliability of their midfield and a move for Matheus Nunes of Sporting looks the most realistic this summer.

The 23-year-old has reportedly been learning English ahead of a potential move to England.
