After claims of an interview scheduled with £26M manager, Liverpool's approach is clarified

After the news broke that Liverpool FC owners Fenway Sports Group (FSG) are in talks with former sporting director Michael Edwards, many have wondered how this impacts the hunt for a manager.

As we're all unfortunately aware of (ignorance really is bliss), Jurgen Klopp will leave his post as manager when the 2023/24 season comes to a close.

With current sporting director Jorg Schmadtke also leaving the club when the season ends, Liverpool are in need of a new one and who better to bring the sporting director merry-go-round that started with his exit to an end, than the man himself?

Edwards wants full control of football operations to return but it remains to be seen what FSG have offered him to come back and what that would mean for the club.

But what about Xabi Alonso and his supposed interview?

After claims of an interview scheduled with £26M manager, Liverpool's approach is clarified

Liverpool are being more professional in their approach of Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso than their biggest competition, Bayern Munich, according to the Guardian journalist Andy Hunter.

He reports: "Alonso is the leading candidate for the Liverpool manager’s job but the Premier League leaders, unlike Bayern Munich, wish to respect his attempts to win the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen rather than enter a public courtship of their popular former midfielder."

Hunter adds that while Alonso is "acutely" aware of Liverpool's interest, Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim is a man of interest as well.

As far as what all the most reliable Liverpool journalists are saying, suggestions that an interview between Alonso and FSG has already been scheduled seem to be wide of the mark for the time being.
