Jurgen Klopp "in talks" with Thiago Alcantara

Jurgen Klopp "in talks" with Thiago Alcantara

Jurgen Klopp has reportedly been in talks with Bayern Munich midfielder Thiago about a move to Liverpool.

Thiago to Liverpool continues to be one of the strangest transfer rumours of the summer.

The story developed as more details emerged on Jan Aage Fjortoft's podcast Pod Save The Ball on Tuesday evening.

The Norwegian ex-footballer, and now football journalist, had fellow journalists Christian Falk and Fabrizio Romano on the latest episode.

The trio further reiterated what we have known since June - Jurgen Klopp wants to sign Thiago and Thiago wants to join Liverpool.

Falk pointed out that the transfer is now simply a question of money.

Bayern want €30 million, while Liverpool do not want to spend big due to the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on finances.

The Bild reporter also noted that other English clubs could potentially join the race for the Spaniard if Liverpool do not wrap up a deal soon.

Romano reiterated Falk's claim that Klopp wants the player and that Thiago would love to join the Reds.

He said: "He is absolutely convinced they would be the perfect team for his style of play."

The Italian added that Thiago and Klopp have been in talks for a number of weeks.

However, there is not yet an official bid on the table.

As mentioned, this is the strangest transfer saga of this year.

Liverpool have limited money and, after the sale of Dejan Lovren and the signing of Kostas Tsimikas, have two main holes in the squad.

These gaps are at centre-back and in the front three.

It makes very little sense for the club to spend what little money they have on a midfielder, as this is the position that Liverpool have the most depth in.

Thiago is also 29 and has a history of injuries - two factors that normally turn Liverpool off signing a player.

Yet the rumours seem to be going nowhere, with massive journalists like Fjortoft, Falk and Romano confirming the interest.

Jurgen Klopp is a massive fan of Thiago. He clearly sees him as a player too good to pass up on.

It seems to be the rare occasion in which the boss is thinking with his heart regarding a transfer, rather than sticking to his usual criteria.

Equally, Thiago seems to want Liverpool above all other options.

He has tasted success in both Spain and Germany, so England is now the obvious country to tackle next.

The logical explanation is that Gini Wijnaldum, yet to extend his contract that expires next summer, could be on his way out. This could mean that Liverpool would sign a similar-style player with similar experience to replace him.

The English press seems to be pushing the narrative that Thiago to Liverpool will not happen, while the foreign media are saying that it is very possible.

Another factor to consider is Bayern's Champions League campaign.

It is possible that we will know a lot more when the Champions League is over. Both player and club will be heavily focused on that for now.

Uncertainty remains from numerous angles. Yet ultimately, the reality is actually quite clear.

If Fenway Sports Group will pay Bayern €30 million, Thiago Alcantara will become a Liverpool player.
