Bayern's Thiago wants Liverpool move

Bayern's Thiago wants Liverpool move

According to reports in Germany, Bayern Munich star Thiago wants to join Liverpool this summer.

The Spain midfielder looks set to reject a contract extension at the Allianz. He is about to enter the final year of his deal in Germany.

Bild claim that Bayern had negotiated a new contract with Thiago in May. He was set to sign it but ultimately decided against it.

The player feels that this is his last chance to make a big career move, as he is now 29-years-old. He seemingly fancies a move abroad, and the Premier League may be his next destination.

Thiago's teammates are rumoured to believe that the player wants a move to Liverpool.

The Bild report also notes that Jurgen Klopp is a big fan of the player.

Thiago also has the option of a return to former club Barcelona.

The Catalans negotiated a €25 million buy-back clause in his contract when he moved to Bavaria in 2013.

The La Masia academy graduate was signed for Bayern by Pep Guardiola in 2013 for €25 million.

The 37-cap Spain international has since played 230 times for the German side. This number would undoubtedly be much higher if not for his constant injury struggles.

He is known as one of the most technically gifted players in world football.

He is a joy to watch, with his close control and passing ability relatively unrivalled by other midfielders.

He is effective too, with 31 goals and 37 assists for Bayern, despite often playing a deep midfield role.

The Italy-born star also makes a big defensive contribution. He has made an average 5.8 tackles and interceptions per game in the Champions League this term, per Who Scored.

His injury woes have continued this season, but he has still been one of the best players in the Bundesliga.

Will Thiago to Liverpool actually happen?

Under normal circumstances, this does not feel like a Liverpool-style transfer at all.

At 29, Thiago is much older than the profile Liverpool normally go for. Jurgen Klopp is also usually against signing injury-prone players, which Thiago is.

There is also the well-documented unwillingness by FSG to spend big this summer due to the current crisis brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

This seems similar to the recent Philippe Coutinho story. The player may want Liverpool, but Liverpool may not necessarily want the player.

One reason Liverpool may strike would be if the player is going on the cheap. Being in the final year of his contract, Thiago would cost much less than market value.

Another potential reason that the club may decide to sign Thiago would be if Gini Wijnaldum left. The Dutchman is also approaching the final year of his contract and as of yet has not signed an extension.

While he is expected to sign, he may decide that he wants to move on.

If he does, Thiago would be a fantastic replacement due to his similar playing style and experience level.
