Eddie Howe’s Newcastle United and Everton are set to face each other in a high-profile pre-season fixture at the home of Scottish Rugby this summer.
The two Premier League clubs will go head-to-head at Murrayfield in Edinburgh on Wednesday, August 12, just days before the English top-flight season gets underway.
Newcastle endured a difficult campaign last season, finishing 12th in the table after having qualified for the Champions League the previous year.
Everton manager Davie Moyes guided his side to 13th place, a solid enough return for the Merseyside club after they flirted with relegation the season before.
Scotland’s Nathan Patterson is expected to be in contention to feature following an anticipated extended break after this summer’s World Cup Finals.
Murrayfield has become a well-established venue for summer clashes between English and European clubs in recent years.
Liverpool hosted Serie A side Napoli at the ground back in 2019, while Man Utd faced Lyon there in 2023 before taking on Rangers a year later.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: “An exciting test against Premier League opposition at a historic venue like Murrayfield Stadium will play an important part in our pre-season preparations.”
Howe added: “I’m sure our fans will bring a special atmosphere to Edinburgh for a fantastic summer away day, giving the players a massive lift as we build towards the new campaign.”
Moyes said facing Newcastle at Scottish Gas Murrayfield would give Everton a valuable opportunity to test themselves against Premier League opposition ahead of the new season.
The Everton manager said: “Pre-season is an important period for the players and staff, and a fixture like this, in one of the biggest stadiums in the country, will help us continue building towards the start of the campaign.”
Moyes also highlighted the club’s strong ties north of the border, adding: “Everton has always had a strong connection with Scotland, and we know how well our supporters travel, not just from Merseyside but from across the country.”
He concluded: “Edinburgh is a fantastic city and this fixture gives Evertonians the chance to come together, enjoy the occasion and get behind the team in what should be a really good day for everyone connected with the Club.”
