Extending Mohamed Salah’s Liverpool contract is an expensive venture but FSG cannot for a second consider letting him leave.
The Egyptian is in Cameroon this month for the Africa Cup of Nations but the main topic of conversation remains his future at Liverpool and whether he will put pen to paper on a new deal at Anfield.
Mohamed Salah puts pressure on FSG again with fresh interview
In a recent interview with GQ, the no.11 insisted that he is not asking for ‘crazy stuff’ in his talks with the club.
He said: “I want to stay, but it’s not in my hands. It’s in their hands. They know what I want. I’m not asking for crazy stuff.
“The thing is when you ask for something and they show you they can give you something.
“Because they appreciate what you did for the club. I’ve been here for my fifth year here now. I know the club very well. I love the fans. The fans love me. But with the administration, they have [been] told the situation. It’s in their hands.”
Reports emerge regarding contract demands made to Liverpool
The Athletic initially reported this week that a deal to keep Salah at Liverpool “will likely be one of the most lucrative in Liverpool’s history” which is no surprise as he is the best player in the world currently.
However, a fresh report from Chris Bascombe claims that “Salah is hoping to be paid in the region of £400,000 a week, similar to Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne” in line with his status as the top player in the Premier League.
If he was at a different club, Salah could probably ask for a lot more. Over the course of a full year, Liverpool would have to pay the forward a total of £20.8million/year which I assume would not include bonuses for winning silverware etc.
FSG can be forgiven for hesitating but not for letting Salah leave
If FSG have hesitated because they have never paid a player this much and are considering the knock-on effect it will have on talks with players in the future then that’s fair but if they are considering letting him go, then the American owners are no longer suitable caretakers for Liverpool Football Club.
They’ve done a wonderful job working with Jurgen Klopp to take the Reds back to the top of the European football ladder but it’s beginning to feel as though they have taken us as far as they can without messing things up or ruining the good work they’ve done so far.
