The Mohamed Salah contract saga has blown up since the forward opened up about not getting an offer from the club yet on Sunday evening. Liverpool are still in talks with his representatives but the club are now under pressure to sort out a new deal soon.
Salah wants to stay at Liverpool and the club also want to hold on to a modern great but there is still no agreement over a new deal. There are major differences between the two sides but the key issue is still the length of the proposed new deal.
The forward believes he has done enough to earn the security of a three-year contract since there is little sign of him slowing down. However, Liverpool are wary of getting trapped in an expensive contract with an ageing player and are reluctant to meet those terms.
The word is that the talks are still happening in a positive atmosphere but the two sides are still far apart when it comes to reaching an agreement over a new contract.
Salah’s outburst has ramped up the pressure on Liverpool and the fans are blaming the club and the hierarchy for not doing enough to ensure that they hold on to the forward.
Key Reds official getting the blame for the Mo Salah contract mess
Richard Hughes became the new Liverpool sporting director earlier this year but has yet to convince the fans.
A lethargic summer transfer window didn’t make him any popular and the Reds supporters are blaming him for the way the negotiations have dragged for Salah’s new contract.
Experienced agent Rob Jansen dealt with Hughes last summer as Johnny Heitinga’s representative when the Dutchman joined Arne Slot’s backroom staff.
The Dutch agent feels the Liverpool sporting director is to be blamed for the mess around Salah as he believes Hughes is far too robotic and lacks empathy.
He believes that approach is not working for a player like Salah who is known for being emotional.
“One thing Richard Hughes doesn’t have is any sense of empathy. Zero. He’s a robot. I know that because I negotiated with him, for Heitinga”, Jansen said on the Kieft Jansen Egmond Gijp podcast.
“There’s zero feelings in him. That may well be the reason. Especially with a player like Salah, who has emotion, has a different culture and is sensitive to warmth.”
