Atalanta vs. Liverpool - The key word is BELIEVE

Liverpool have travelled to Italy where they are set to attempt an unlikely comeback over Atalanta. Belief among supporters is at an all-time low but Jurgen Klopp taught us better than that.

We all watched in utter disbelief as Gian Piero Gasperini's side denied every attempt from the home side to claw a goal back but in the end, Liverpool wasted the power of Anfield in the first leg.

Now, they face a daunting trip to the Gewiss Stadium needing at least three goals with no reply to stand a chance of reaching the semi-finals.

What has Jurgen Klopp said about Liverpool's chances?

The German coach previewed the match with a press conference on Thursday and shared a bit about the preparation process ahead of kickoff, drawing on how it was before Liverpool beat Barcelona 4-0 in 2019.

Klopp told the gathered reporters: "What I remember from that time [against Barcelona] is I usually don't prepare these kind of things like that, especially not a day before or four years before or whatever.

"What I will say to the boys I will think about tomorrow, but definitely nothing about these kind of things were said in the press conference before. I remember I said if we fail then let's fail in the most beautiful way – and that's exactly how I see it again.

"But, I said it already, we want to win the game – and if we want to win the game then we better play good. If we play good we have a chance to win it and then we will see. It is exactly like that."

Klopp may not know what he will say to the players in his pre-match team talk but the message will be the same as the one I want to get across to fans.

We all need to BELIEVE.

Without belief, Liverpool FC would be an ordinary club

Klopp may be keen to avoid comparisons to the Barcelona comeback but what made it possible (aside from the talent of the players) was the belief that fed down onto the pitch from the stands.

That level of noise won't be possible as it's an away game but the fact remains: Liverpool's players and fans both need to believe for this comeback to be possible.

The night of the Barcelona comeback, Mohamed Salah was injured and could not play.

He rocked up at Anfield, however, wearing a shirt which read: "NEVER GIVE UP."

It's an iconic moment from the Egyptian but that message remains true to this day.

Liverpool could still win both the Premier League and the Europa League and while a lot needs to change for that to happen, it certainly won't if we give up.

So what do Liverpool have to do to reach the semi-finals?

Score a heap of goals for one thing.

Usually in a match preview, I would talk about the tactics but I honestly have no idea what needs to change from the first leg just that something has to change.

Klopp said in his press conference that he doesn't believe Gasperini's man-marking was the problem even though the Italian got his game plan spot on.

He said it had more to do with how his players reacted to it.

Here's what Klopp said: "We played four years ago against Atalanta and they played like this, but the result was different here. Man-marking is not the problem – they did really well, but we did not do well.

"Yes, we didn't win against [Manchester] United but we created I don't know how many chances and they play man-marking so that's not the problem. We have to do better, we have to do better. We played, in these moments, to their cards but that's not to change anymore, it is just the description of the game.

"Specific runs we did not often enough that night would have caused them more problems, but tomorrow the game is even more difficult because they don't have to score at all and I don't know exactly what they want to do."

Liverpool just need a bit of luck...

Atalanta vs. Liverpool - The key word is BELIEVE

In their last three games, Liverpool have taken 67 shots but only found the back of the net twice.

If they can find a bit of luck and perhaps their scoring boots, there's no reason why they cannot score three against Atalanta.

In fact, Gasperini's side have conceded at least three goals on four occasions this season.

It's possible.

Especially when you factor in Liverpool's and Klopp's history of dramatic comebacks.

We just need to believe.
