Marc Guehi was probably one of Arne Slot’s biggest regrets this summer. Despite signing Giovanni Leoni, the Dutchman is left with only three centre-backs in the squad.
Leoni faced an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury against Southampton. Now, the Italian has undergone surgery as the defender posted updates on Instagram. “Surgery done. Thanks, everyone, for the messages. I’ll be back soon”, the teenager posted.
Now, Slot will have to manage with just Virgil van Dijk, Ibrahima Konate and Joe Gomez. Leoni was awarded a debut as Van Dijk and Konate had a heavy week before the Carabao Cup clash against the Saints.
The duo played 270+ minutes in under seven days, risking injury to the Reds’ first-choice centre-backs. Giovanni made his debut but couldn’t finish the match as the defender went down in the 81st minute.
He was then subbed off as Slot, and later mentioned that he might be out for a year. Despite the injury, the Dutchman hasn’t hinted at any new transfers while the Reds make progress with Ibrahima Konate.

Guehi recently led his team to another win as the Eagles won 2-0 away in Poland against Ukrainian side Dynamo Kyiv. Before the game, the Englishman commented on his potential transfer to Liverpool next summer as his contract expires at the end of the season.
“I don’t have much to say, to be honest. I’m focused on playing football and playing for this club. But to the fans, thank you very much for your support. I definitely feel it.”
“It’s something I don’t think of at all. My only focus is on the club; I’m not too worried about any personal accolades. As long as the team is where it needs to be, I’m happy.”

Guehi is focused on Crystal Palace at the moment
Despite almost signing for Liverpool in the summer, the English international seems to be focused on his role at Selhurst Park. His contract expires at the end of the season, and a move is certain as Guehi’s intentions are clear.
“When you’ve tasted success, you’re definitely not satisfied and do want more. Everyone at the club strives for more. We’ve seen what we can do. If we keep our heads down, hopefully we can have many more opportunities”, Marc told the media.
Liverpool have started renewal talks anew with Ibrahima Konate. This time, the Reds are confident, but Slot will probably need another defender in January even after securing Konate.
