Manchester City star explains why he and Liverpool star “immediately” shared a conversation at fulltime

Virgil van Dijk and Kevin De Bruyne shared a conversation after Liverpool and Manchester City drew 2-2 and the latter explained why they made a beeline for each other at fulltime.

The Premier League title race still hangs in the balance after the Eithad witnessed a brilliant draw and while it feels as though both sides have wasted a massive opportunity, both sides will feel they simply need to win their remaining games.

Pep Guardiola’s men are in the driving seat as they lead by one point but having already thrown away a 14 point advantage, there’s a chance they could still slip up with a draw or defeat in their remaining matches.

That said, Liverpool have a much more challenging fixture list between now and the end of the season and will be frustrated at being in a situation where City need to drop points for them to leapfrog their rivals.

Kevin De Bruyne, the scorer of the opener, spoke after the game when asked about the reason for his and Virgil van Dijk’s conversation at fulltime.

“You and Virgil immediately walked to each other after the game,” a reporter said after the game, “Why was that?”

Replying, the Manchester City midfielder said, “I know Virgil.. me and Virgil see each other a lot.

“Our children go to the same school and they like to play together, so it was just a friendly chat.”

While it would be nice to dream of De Bruyne playing for Liverpool, it’s quite obvious that would never happen.

The former Wolfsburg star was outstanding for City on Sunday and Liverpool’s midfield was unable to handle him. It felt as though he played around Fabinho and Thiago and found the half-spaces perfectly.

It’s no surprise that Fabinho and Thiago both ended the game on yellow cards while the latter should have been sent off for a second bookable offence for his challenge on KDB, however, Anthony Taylor’s lenient refereeing made it possible for him to stay on the pitch.

It was a mercy for Liverpool and Klopp as City would have likely gained the advantage and found the breakthrough with the numerical advantage.
