Alejandro Garnacho’s difficult season at Chelsea took a fresh turn of embarrassment this week after his former Manchester United teammates appeared to publicly mock him on social media following the Blues’ 0-1 defeat at Old Trafford, a result that left Garnacho’s position at Stamford Bridge under renewed scrutiny.
Luke Shaw posted a celebratory image after United’s victory, and Bruno Fernandes responded to it in a manner that sources close to the player interpreted as a veiled dig at Garnacho, who started the match and again failed to influence proceedings in any meaningful way.

Fernandes’ response was seen as pointed given his well-documented close relationship with Garnacho during the Argentine’s time at United, with the Portuguese captain having been one of the players most publicly supportive of his development as a youngster at Old Trafford.
Wayne Rooney was also reported to have liked the post, adding another layer of symbolism to what became a social media moment widely shared across football platforms.
Former United academy director Nicky Butt went further on his podcast, delivering a blunt verdict on Garnacho that aligned with the broader narrative gathering around the 21 year old. Butt said the best thing United did was sell him, and that while he would not comment heavily on his ability, his attitude when he was at the club was a disgrace.
Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior came out publicly to defend his winger in the aftermath of the loss, insisting Garnacho had special qualities and that he trusted the player to come good, but the manager’s words did little to quiet a growing body of opinion that the £40 million summer signing from United has been a failed transfer.
Transfer insider Fabrizio Romano indicated there are currently no bids and no concrete negotiations for Garnacho, and that the message from the club internally remains one of support, with Rosenior not yet willing to write off a player still in his first season following an unusual start that included joining after pre-season had already concluded.
However, Romano also acknowledged that Chelsea’s broader summer planning could include adding another wide forward regardless of Garnacho’s situation, and that Champions League qualification would be central to every major decision the club makes in the window.
Garnacho has managed just one Premier League goal in 22 appearances this season, and pundits including former Manchester City defender Micah Richards have identified his lack of conviction and contribution off the ball as the core problems undermining his impact at the club.
