Major update on David Coote following controversial Liverpool video

The Professional Game Match Officials Board were plunged into crisis mode on Monday evening after one of their top match referees was found using expletives against Liverpool and their former manager Jurgen Klopp.

A video emerged on social media on Monday which showed David Coote, a Premier League referee, abusing Liverpool and Klopp in an ill-advised recording alongside an unnamed man.

While the full context of the video has yet to be ascertained, the 42-year-old was heard calling Liverpool ‘s***’ and Klopp a ‘c***’ during exchanges with the other participant.

Coote has been suspended by the PGMOL pending investigations and the referees’ body have promised to look into the matter in detail as Liverpool fans rage on about the conduct of the match official.

The 42-year-old’s career as a match official in England is likely over given there is video evidence of him abusing a premier football club and their former manager.

David Coote has confirmed the video is real

There were suggestions that the referee could end up denying the veracity of the video but no such thing has happened.

According to talkSPORT, Coote has accepted that the video is genuine and it is indeed him who was found abusing Liverpool and Klopp.

The video appears to be referring to a Premier League match that Coote officiated between Liverpool and Burnley in July 2020, which ended 1-1.

In another video, the referee told the unnamed man that his tirade against Liverpool and Klopp should not become public but the cat is out of the bag.

Klopp did indirectly criticise Coote last season when he was on VAR duty and denied Liverpool a penalty in their 1-1 draw against Arsenal at Anfield.

Can you name the club Liverpool sold these players to?

He was in charge of Liverpool’s 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Anfield and none of his decisions came under a scanner during the game.

PGMOL are desperate to make sure that this one incident does not cast a long shadow on the personal integrity of their match officials.

Referees need to win back the confidence of the fans from scratch when the Premier League resumes after the international break.
