Liverpool’s £144M target has ‘secret clause’ in contract – has spoken to Liverpool in the past

Liverpool’s £144M target has a ‘secret clause’ in his contract that could see him leave the club earlier than his contract suggests.

The footballing world has been put on notice as Kylian Mbappe’s deal at Paris Saint-Germain ends in the summer of 2024, instead of the previously thought 2025.

That means after this season, he will enter the final year of his deal with Europe’s elite all dreaming and hoping of securing an incredible signing on a free transfer.

Although the chances of signing him are very slim, he has been linked with the Reds and even spoke to them in the past over a potential deal.

‘Secret clause’ and previous talks

According to L’Equipe, Mbappe’s current deal runs until the summer of 2024, with an extra year until 2025 thought to be at the discretion of the player.

This tells us that come the end of this season, Mbappe will be a year away from potentially being able to leave PSG for free – and then the media frenzy will surely begin as he is one of the most high-profile names in Football and Sport.

It has also been claimed in Marca, via Sport Witness, that several Premier League clubs are mentioned as “suitors” for Mbappe should he leave PSG. With Manchester United and Chelsea mentioned, but there is no word about Liverpool – who he has spoken to in the past.

The Frenchman admitted that he did hold talks with Liverpool about his future after securing his new deal, but clearly, nothing came of those discussions.

“‘I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool,” Mbappe told the Telegraph in May. “I don’t know why, you will have to ask her!

“It’s a good club and we met them five years ago [too]. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”

Jurgen Klopp spoke on the matter back in 2019, when this Liverpool team were at their peak and he claimed the club simply couldn’t afford the superstar forward.

“OK, from a sporting point of view, there are not a lot of reasons to not sign him. What a player he is. But it is about the money of course. No chance. Absolutely no chance. Sorry for killing that story.”

Considering Liverpool’s owners’ refusal to spend big money on wages and players, it’s highly unlikely that a move could ever happen, but he clearly holds the club in high regard and should Liverpool return to their title and Champions League winning form, he could become more of a legitimate target.
