Liverpool have suffered a major transfer setback after a £70m-rated central defender is set to choose Real Madrid over a move to the Premier League champions. The decision could come as a shock for Arne Slot’s side look to bolster their backline this summer, but the Spanish giants could swoop in with a more appealing offer, adding another twist to a chaotic transfer window.
The Premier League champions are in the market for a centre-back, with Jarell Quansah set to leave the club to join Bayer Leverkusen in the ongoing transfer window.
Liverpool missed out on Dean Huijen earlier in the window when the former Bournemouth defender decided to reject offers to stay in England to agree to a transfer to Real Madrid.
The Merseyside giants could face the same fate on another centre-back they are targeting in Marc Guehi, who is weighing up his options in the ongoing summer transfer window.

Marc Guehi plots Real Madrid transfer despite interest from Liverpool

According to Football Insider, the Crystal Palace captain has serious concerns about joining Liverpool in the ongoing transfer window.
His representatives have been in talks with Liverpool over a potential switch, and the club are expected to table an offer for the defender soon.
However, Guehi is worried about being the third-choice centre-back behind Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate at Anfield if he joins this summer.
He would be more interested in joining Liverpool than Arsenal or Newcastle United, but he wants to continue to play first-team football ahead of next year’s World Cup.
Guehi is considering running down his contract at Crystal Palace and leaving for Real Madrid or Barcelona next summer.
Real Madrid have their eyes on him and are more than willing to pick up a defender of his quality on a free transfer next year.
The England defender has not made up his mind and is still very much considering all his options before taking a final call.
Liverpool cannot miss out on Guehi
Guhi is one of the best defenders in the Premier League, and was a star of the England team that lost the European Championship final last year.
Newcastle have been chasing him since last summer, but by all indications, it seems the centre-back wants to join Liverpool over other options this summer.
With only a year left on his contract, Palace will have to accept less than half of the fee Guehi would have commanded under normal circumstances.
With Ibrahima Konate stalling on signing a new deal, signing Guehi would show the club are ready to look beyond the Frenchman going forward.
It would be criminal if Liverpool allowed this opportunity to pass them by, given the fee involved, and if he ended up joining Real Madrid next summer on a free transfer next year, it would annoy the Reds fans.
