Steve McManaman believes Liverpool should emulate their rivals Manchester United and sign someone like Jadon Sancho as they close in on completing his move.
Via their official website, the Red Devils confirmed that they finally reached an agreement with Borussia Dortmund for the transfer of Jadon Sancho.
The post reads: “The signing is subject to contractual terms and a medical, which will be completed after his involvement in the UEFA European Championship.”
Liverpool urged to copy Sancho signing
The move has taken over a year but with Utd close to finally completing it, Liverpool have been urged to copy them by Steve McManaman.
“Well they’ve brought in Konate haven’t they, the young lad,” McManaman told ESPN FC’s Extra Time, via the Express.
“They’ve got an abundance of central defenders now. I would like them to get a winger, you could even say a Sancho-type player.
“But a winger because I think sometimes when they can’t break teams down they rely on Trent [Alexander-Arnold] and Andy Robertson to do all the hard work.
“You can’t expect your right-back and your left-back to be your right-wingers and your left-wingers all the time.
“So I’d like them to get a bit of help. If you see Salah, he likes to come inside.
“If you see Jota, he likes to play inside. Not many people go round the outside of defenders and change the angle of the cross when games are not going well, when you can’t break teams down.”
Copying Sancho signing a lot easier said than
There’s a reason it took over a year of negotiations to finally sign the Englishman from Borussia Dortmund and that’s because clubs don’t want to lose world-class players.
There aren’t a lot of players out there with the 21-year-old’s ability and the ones that can match him will either cost far beyond what Liverpool are prepared to pay or simply aren’t available.
The likes of Kylian Mbappe, Jack Grealish and Kingsley Coman would all be incredible players at Liverpool but are unlikely to move to Anfield for a number of reasons.
Interestingly, Mbappe is the most likely out of these three to join Jurgen Klopp on Merseyside.
Liverpool need a new attacker but who?
The Reds have been linked with a host of midfielders and don’t seem short of options in that regard but signing the right player upfront will likely be a lot more challenging.
Raphinha, who seems like the perfect target, is certain to stay at Elland Road with Leeds United and Patson Daka has been snapped up by Leicester City.
Donyell Malen remains a strong candidate to join Liverpool this summer but it will be interesting to see if Mino Raiola makes life difficult for the Reds.
The 53-year-old is infamous for being tough to work with but he gets great results for his clients which is why he never struggles to find top talent to work with.
