Liverpool to make decision on £45M ‘liability’

Arne Slot and Liverpool are set to make a big decision regarding the squad in the near future.

Aside the Reds still battling to secure new deals for Mohamed Salah, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Virgil Van Dijk, the club is also eyeing some big decisions in the near future. Liverpool are top of the Premier League and Champions League group phase so far, with Arne Slot exceeding expectations with the current squad.

There has been no news on any activity in the January window so far. The Reds have stumbled in recent fixtures, dropping points to Manchester United and Nottingham Forest in the league. This has lead fans to call for recruitments in January. Now, Liverpool are set to make a decision on a possible transfer.

The Reds are yet to find a successor to Roberto Firmino. It has been a few years since the Brazilian departed Anfield and the club is yet to find a player of his quality to lead the line. Darwin Nunez was a big money signing brought in to address the goalscoring issues, but the Uruguayan has not lived up to his price tag.

Arne Slot took over at Liverpool this summer, and has preferred to use other options in the striker role instead of Nunez. The 25-year old has made just seven of a possible 15 starts in the league under Arne Slot. The Dutch coach has preferred Diogo Jota and more recently, Luis Diaz in the central role in attack.

The duo have done a decent job, but fans are still unhappy with the situation up top. Jota in particular has proven to be an unreliable option since he joined the club. The Portuguese international has made a combined 33 stars since 2022 and has missed many games due to injury. Now, journalist David Lynch has hinted that Liverpool could sell Jota because of his poor availability:

“It starts the debate around what do you do with him [Diogo Jota] this summer?”

“I don’t expect Liverpool to do anything kind of rash in the January window, but it does raise the question.”

“He’s going to be two years out from the end of his contract when this season ends, can Liverpool rely on him, do they need to cash in on him? I think that’s a big debate that’s coming up.

“I think that’s something bubbling under the surface for the summer,” Lynch adds. “But hopefully this absence only amounts to one game.”

The Reds could use Jota and Nunez funds for new striker

If Liverpool do decide to ship Darwin Nunez and Diogo Jota, the funds could be enough to sign a new striker. The market would have plenty of options in the summer, including the likes of Viktor Gyökeres.
