Liverpool to face ‘heavy competition’ to sign winger Arne Slot called ‘great’

Liverpool could be set to further reinforce their frontline in the January transfer window despite already spending big in the summer.

When the likes of Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz arrived at Anfield over the summer, it seemed like it was inevitable that Liverpool would retain their Premier League crown.

However, with neither man hitting the ground running in Merseyside, the Reds’ title defence looks to have collapsed before the turn of the new year.

With the pressure beginning to mount on Arne Slot, the Dutch manager may need to delve back into the market to help get his side back on track for the second half of the season.

Enter Antoine Semenyo.

Liverpool ‘seriously working’ on a deal for Antoine Semenyo in January

With Federico Chiesa potentially leaving Liverpool in January, there could be an opportunity to replace the Italian with a player that Slot has previously praised this season.

Following the Reds’ dramatic 4-2 over Bournemouth at Anfield back in August, Slot labelled Semenyo as a “great player”, with the Ghanaian winger netting twice during the game.

  • Semenyo has started 11 games for Bournemouth in the Premier League so far this season
  • The winger has scored six goals, whilst also providing three assists in those 11 appearances
  • For comparison, Mohamed Salah has scored four goals and provided two assists in 12 Premier League appearances this season

According to reports from Florian Plettenberg on X on November 24, Liverpool are said to be “seriously working” on a deal for the 25-year-old.

Bournemouth’s talisman is said to have a release clause of around £61.5 million, with Liverpool set to face “heavy competition” from other Premier League outfits if they want to secure Semenyo’s signature.

Liverpool should invest in their defence rather than Antoine Semenyo

With the amount of attacking talent already available to Slot, investing Liverpool’s funds into the backline would seem to be the wiser decision.

The Reds have conceded six goals in their last two matches, and their defensive woes have been there for all to see ever since their defeat in the Community Shield to Crystal Palace.

Sven Botman has been one of the defenders linked to Liverpool, and whilst his arrival may not garner the same excitement from supporters as a potential deal for Semenyo, it would undoubtedly be a smarter piece of business for Slot and Co. to pursue.
