Liverpool target still prefers Anfield over Spain

Marc Guéhi’s saga has become as complicated as Alexander Isak’s at this point. The English defender was going to embark on a new journey at Anfield, but a final-hour blow from Crystal Palace meant he’d stay at Selhurst Park.

The 2026 summer transfer window deadline day was a mixed bag for the Reds as they did manage to make the most expensive transfer in British history, but also fell short of fixing their defensive problems.

The Merseysiders’ defence isn’t a mess, but a lack of depth means even one injury can prove to be season-defining. Arne Slot will obviously not be hoping for such a situation, but anything can happen in football, fortunately or unfortunately.

Guéhi’s transfer was almost a done deal, with the Reds paying £35m for his services. However, as the Eagles weren’t able to find a replacement for their skipper, the deal fell through.

Brighton and Hove Albion defender Igor Julio decided to make a U-turn in the 11th hour as the Brazilian chose West Ham United over Palace.

This led to Palace gaffer Oliver Glasner barring Guéhi from leaving Selhurst Park. The Austrian was confident of a bad season following the ambition Crystal Palace had shown in the summer transfer window.

As it was reported previously that Guéhi now prefers a move to Real Madrid instead of Liverpool. In a shocking turn of events, GIVEMESPORT senior football correspondent Ben Jacobs is supporting the contrary.

From the looks of it, the Englishman is still positive on a move to Merseyside. The Reds are also keen on making the switch official in the upcoming summer.

“They will likely add another centre-back, and perhaps a more senior one like Guehi, come the summer. If Liverpool move for Guehi on a free transfer, especially if Ibrahima Konate departs for Real Madrid, I think the Crystal Palace captain would be very keen and still very willing to join, as he was during the last window. But I don’t expect Liverpool to try and panic-buy Guehi in January. I think that has been ruled out at the moment.”

Arne Slot is hoping to save the cash after a record-breaking transfer window in the summer. With Dayot Upamecano also on the Dutchman’s radar, Liverpool will be deciding on some interesting moves in 2026.
