Liverpool fans were left underwhelmed by the club’s moves in the last summer transfer window where they failed to land their priorities and ultimately signed Federico Chiesa for a reasonable fee from Juventus towards the end of the window to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad.
The Reds did make some bold moves in the market but their plans went for a toss when a player of Martin Zubimendi’s quality rejected a chance to move to Anfield in favour of staying at Real Sociedad in the summer and is unlikely to change his mind any time soon.
Liverpool also tried to snare Anthony Gordon from Newcastle United early in the summer, when the Magpies desperately needed money before 30 June to meet the Premier League’s PSR requirements.
A deal was in place between the two clubs, and the winger wanted to move to Liverpool, but Newcastle ultimately found buyers for two other players and managed to keep the former Everton winger.
The interest from Liverpool turned Gordon’s head and Newcastle were worried about his state of mind when he returned to the club in the summer after the European Championship.
However, it seems everything has been sorted between the two camps and it is unlikely that Liverpool will be signing him in the near future.
Newcastle have tied down the Liverpool target to a new long-term contract
In a major blow to Liverpool’s hopes of landing Gordon in the near future, Newcastle have managed to convince him to sign a new deal.
The England winger has penned a new long-term deal, which has secured his future at St. James’ Park for the time being.
Gordon has been an important player for Newcastle and it was only financial desperation that forced the club to think about selling him in the summer.
The club want to build around a player of the winger’s capability and wants him to be part of any future success.
Gordon wanted the move to Liverpool in the summer but ultimately decided to sign a new deal to enhance his earnings and be part of a football club who have major ambitions for the future.
Will the Reds ever get a chance to sign Gordon again?
The summer was a big opportunity for Liverpool to sign Gordon and if Newcastle didn’t find buyers for Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh, the England winger would have been at Anfield.
For now, the door is closed for Liverpool as it seems the attacker is feeling settled again at Newcastle and is a major part of the club’s plans for the future.
However, the longer Newcastle have to wait to win their first major trophy or become a Champions League regular, the harder it will be for them to hold on to their top stars.
The window to sign Gordon could open again in the future if Newcastle continue to struggle to be in the conversation for Champions League football on a regular basis.
