Liverpool suffer blow in pursuit of top target

Arne Slot

Liverpool are in the market for midfield reinforcements in the winter window after they failed to complete a deal to sign a new number 6 that Arne Slot wanted.

The Reds are drawing up plans to bring in a defensive midfielder in the winter window as they look to support Slot’s side with more signings in the middle of the season.

Signing a number 6 was a priority last summer for the Reds but Liverpool dropped the ball on that count after Martin Zubimendi decided against leaving Real Sociedad despite getting heavily courted by the Reds.

Liverpool inexplicably decided against signing a midfielder after the snub from the Spaniard and were only saved by the emergence of Ryan Gravenberch in the number 6 role.

Zubimendi has continued to get linked with a move to Liverpool given he was clearly the player Slot and the rest of the club hierarchy pushed hard to sign last summer.

However, any future move for the Spaniard will be tricky as there is already talk of Manchester City wanting to sign him as the replacement for Rodri in the winter window.

The race to sign Martin Zubimendi has one more participant

Zubimendi has said little to suggest that he is regretting his decision to stay at La Real but there are suggestions that he could move on next summer.

Liverpool will be on high alert along with Manchester City but according to the Independent, another Premier League club are in the fray for the Spaniard.

Arsenal are interested in getting their hands on the Spain midfielder next summer.

Mikel Arteta wants to add a number 6 to his squad to have more midfield options and Zubimendi has been identified as a top target.

Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?

It has been claimed that Real Sociedad are likely to sell him for the right offer at the end of the season and Arsenal are positioning themselves as a viable destination for the midfielder.

Zubimendi is considered the best number 6 who is not playing one of the big European clubs and is almost certain to move on from the Anoeta next year.

It remains to be seen whether Liverpool decide to go back for him when he becomes available given how highly they rated him last summer.
