Liverpool sign la Liga star: Arne Slot’s ideal January transfer window

Liverpool are making noises that do not sound as if they have plans to make any serious effort to reinforce their squad in the January transfer window. Arne Slot has essentially turned Jurgen Klopp’s squad into title contenders after the club failed to back him properly last summer. It seems the club are content with the quality of their squad and do not believe that they will need new arrivals to sustain a title challenge.

Federico Chiesa was the only first-team signing at Anfield last summer and he has played just 78 minutes of football since his arrival. Slot has done a brilliant job of turning Ryan Gravenberch into a number 6 after the club failed to bring in a defensive midfielder. Curtis Jones has emerged out of the shadows for the Reds as well and they are now favourites to win the Premier League.

The club are making progress in talks over new deals for Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah and they also have plans to move on a few players.

Liverpool are open to offers for Wataru Endo and the club are keen to loan out Tyler Morton who is a Leeds United target.

There is a feeling amongst Liverpool fans that a little push in the winter window could go a long way in ensuring Slot wins the league in his first season as Liverpool’s manager. However, it seems the club have different plans and the Dutchman also seems to be shying away from making any demands.

However, Slot is in an excellent position to demand new signings in January and there is one player who could come in and absolutely take the team to the next level in the January transfer window.

Liverpool’s love affair with Martin Zubimendi

Zubimendi is the player the Merseyside giants wanted last summer and believed that they had him in the bag from Real Sociedad. However, the Spain midfielder rejected a move to Anfield after contemplating for days. He made the decision to stay at Real Sociedad despite interest from the Premier League.

The Spaniard has continued to impress and is considered the best number 6 in the game who is not playing for one of the bigwigs of European football.

Many still believe that Liverpool need a defensive midfielder and Jamie Carragher has claimed they should go for the La Real midfielder in the winter window.

Gravenberch has been brilliant but Zubimendi is a different class and it says a lot about his quality that Liverpool didn’t think there was another alternative to him last summer. Slot would love to have the midfielder in his squad to give him more options as they chase down the Premier League and the Champions League in the latter half of the season.

Can you name the team Liverpool sold these players to?

However, there is no clarity on whether the midfielder would be open to a move in the winter window given his affinity and love towards Real Sociedad.

But the January window could be Liverpool’s last opportunity to have a clear run at him as in the summer Arsenal would be interested in taking him to the Emirates and there is always Manchester City lurking around him given their need for a defensive midfielder.

The Reds could pay for not doing anything

Zubimendi is still putting up the numbers and performances and Liverpool still remain interested in getting their hands on the player but will they act in January?

Liverpool’s inclination towards not wanting to sign players in the winter window as clubs could demand silly money could come back to haunt them. Manchester City and Arsenal won’t stumble every year and there could be a resurgent Chelsea and Manchester United next season.

A player of Zubimendi’s quality and skillset won’t be at the Anoeta for too long and Liverpool could regret not doing anything in the winter window if he ends up at Arsenal, Manchester City or Manchester United in 2025.
