Liverpool are active in the January transfer market as they mark their first signing of the transfer window. The club is expected to be busy in the market as they are grappling with injury woes.
Liverpool have moved swiftly to secure a highly-rated defensive prospect for the future, agreeing a deal to sign 17-year-old Austrian centre-back Ifeanyi Ndukwe. The prodigious teenager will join from Austria Vienna next summer, adding to the club’s defensive pipeline.
This is Liverpool’s first signing of the January transfer Window. Defender Joel Ordonez from Club Brugge is also reportedly close to joining the Reds.
Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano confirmed the agreement, issuing his trademark statement. “Liverpool agree deal to sign 17 year old Austrian centre back Ifeanyi Ndukwe for summer 2026, here we go!” He added that the Austria Vienna talent is “seen as huge talent” and has accepted the Liverpool project.
Have Liverpool signed the new Van Dijk?
The deal is reportedly worth an initial €3 million. The transfer sees the Reds beat competition from clubs including Inter Milan and several German sides. Standing at an imposing 6’5″, Ndukwe has already made a significant impression. He was a defensive leader for Austria’s Under-17 side during their run to the World Cup final last November. The tall defender showcased a mature, front-footed style that has drawn early comparisons to Virgil van Dijk due to his physique and passing range.
According to reports, Ndukwe has already passed a medical. Due to FIFA regulations regarding international transfers for minors, he will officially complete his move when he turns 18, joining in July for pre-season. He is expected to integrate with the club’s U21 setup initially.
The signing is great capture as Liverpool’s strategy of identifying and securing elite young talent throughout Europe continues.
With Ibrahima Konaté’s contract situation unresolved and Virgil van Dijk entering the latter stages of his career, planning for the future is important. However, Ndukwe is a long-term prospect and his inclusion in the team isn’t expected immediately. Ndukwe’s acquisition is a clear investment in the defensive foundation for the coming decade.
Ndukwe’s Liverpool admiration
The Austrian youth international, eligible to represent Nigeria, Austria, or Germany, has described Liverpool as his “dream destination.” For the Reds, securing his signature represents a successful piece of business, capturing a player whose development will be closely monitored by fans and coaches alike at Liverpool.
