Liverpool should sign £42.6m Manchester City star to solve summer transfer dilemma – he’s only on £90,000 a week

Liverpool should take advantage of Gabriel Jesus’ plan to leave Manchester City this summer by making him an offer to move to Anfield.

It sounds a little mad.

And I’m almost certain that Pep Guardiola wouldn’t let him join Jurgen Klopp’s stunning team. Jesus isn’t the most prolific forward but he’d fit into this Liverpool team.

I say we go for it.

Diogo Jota scored 21 goals this season and assisted 8. Almost 30 total goal contributions and a reliable source of goals in the box.

Diogo Jota

But his overall attacking play leaves much to be desired as he often loses the ball and fails to provide the silky link-up play that Roberto Firmino does.

The Brazilian is fantastic at helping set the tempo, receiving the ball between the lines, keeping the ball under pressure and making room for his fellow attackers.

But he is no longer posting elite numbers and so he has ceded his starting role to Jota and Sadio Mane.

Firmino scored 11 goals and assisted 5 despite being restricted by a squad role and multiple injuries.

Mane was one of the stars this season, scoring 23 goals and creating 5. But the Senegal attacker is likely to leave the club this summer to join Bayern Munich.

Sadio Mane

Divock Origi is also leaving (to join AC Milan) and he could be followed out the door by Takumi Minamino.

Klopp is going to need to reinforce quite majorly and will need more than one forward.

Gabriel Jesus should be seriously considered. Unless he has already been and disregarded.

Coming up:

  • Why Liverpool should sign Gabriel Jesus
  • Why signing Gabriel Jesus isn’t a good idea

Why I think Liverpool should sign Gabriel Jesus

Simply put, he fits the system. Not only is he willing to work hard and can win the ball back high up the pitch as well as any forward, but he’s also got a brilliant attitude.

Gabriel Jesus

The former Palmeiras star is willing to work and with a year left on his deal, Man City are looking willing to compromise on their demands of €60million, they’re prepared to let him go for €50million.

The crucial factor is that Jesus is paid just* €90,000/week by City. Liverpool could easily beat that if they were interested in signing him

Not only did he score 13 goals and assist 12 to match it but Jesus offers so much beyond the scope of stats.

His linkup play, for instance, is fantastic and only bias hold rival fans from admitting it. He’s quick, unselfish and has some of the best movement in the game.

Why signing Gabriel Jesus isn’t a good idea

Without much evidence to back it up given some of the world-class playmakers he has played with, I fear Jesus would struggle without elite creators behind him.

Philippe Coutinho, Neymar and Gabriel Jesus

At City, he is used to playing with the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva, Bernardo Silva and with Brazil he has played with Philippe Coutinho, Neymar, Lucas Paqueta and more.

At Liverpool, however, the midfield is conservative and functional. While Jurgen Klopp’s engine room boasts one of the maestros of this generation in Thiago Alcantara.

Another concern I have is that he has never posted elite numbers. He is so close to being an incredible double threat but he has battled to break through the ceiling he has hit but I believe Klopp could help him do that.

His best-ever Premier League season saw him score 14 goals. Ironically, Liverpool won the league title that season.

Liverpool Premier League champions

The most damning negative of signing Jesus is that I strongly believe Liverpool need an elite replacement for Sadio Mane if he does indeed sign for Bayern Munich.

The Senegal star wants a new challenge just as Thiago did by joining the Reds from Bayern Munich although he’s going the other way.

That’s why I said I want Robert Lewandowski to join Liverpool but the Polish forward seems destined to move to La Liga to join Barcelona.

Jesus is just a fantasy signing I have and I know it’s unlikely to ever happen but if it did, I think Klopp could help reach his full potential and become an elite double threat alongside Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah.

*Just 90,000 per week – as far as top Premier League players are concerned, that’s below market. It is, however, an absurd amount to be paid every single week.
