Liverpool are casting their net into Ligue 1 as they look to address a midfield that has underwhelmed throughout the second half of their title defence, with Monaco’s Lamine Camara and RC Lens midfielder Mamadou Sangare both under serious consideration for summer moves. Journalist David Lynch confirmed “definite interest” in the pair from Liverpool’s recruitment team, describing a midfielder signing as something close to a certainty this window.
Camara, 22, has been central to Monaco’s midfield organisation this season and brings a disciplined, positionally astute profile to his game. Despite standing at 1.73 metres, he contests physical duels effectively, winning 6.7 per 90 in Ligue 1, and ranks first among all players in the division for ball recoveries per 90. His Champions League experience this season adds an element of pedigree that many of the other candidates on Liverpool’s list cannot offer, which remains a key differentiator in the eyes of the club’s analysts.
Sangare, 23, presents a different but complementary set of strengths. The Malian international joined Lens from Rapid Vienna last summer and has been one of the standout midfielders in French football since, impressing with his progressive carrying, forward passing, and relentless pressing intensity.
One analyst described him as “all action,” noting that he “can carry it, can pass it and does everything at 50 million miles an hour.” Fifteen senior caps for Mali underline the fact that his development has not gone unnoticed on the international stage either.
Crystal Palace’s Adam Wharton remains Liverpool’s primary midfield target, but the club are clearly planning for contingencies given how competitive his recruitment is expected to be. The uncertainty around Alexis Mac Allister’s future, with Real Madrid links persisting, adds another layer of urgency to Liverpool’s planning. Arne Slot’s side may need two midfield additions rather than one, particularly if further exits materialise. Chelsea and Manchester United have also been linked with Sangare, suggesting that Liverpool will need to move quickly once their targets are finalised.
