Liverpool are expected to invest in their midfield in the upcoming transfer windows after failing to sign the number 6 they wanted last summer.
The Reds are planning to sign a defensive midfielder in the winter window and are expecting to sell Wataru Endo to part-fund the move with Tyler Morton also expected to leave on loan.
Liverpool are likely to continue investing in their midfield next summer as well with suggestions that Dominik Szoboszlai is likely to be sold at the end of the season.
The Reds are tracking several midfielders across Europe as they firm up their plans on how to construct the squad over the course of the next few years under the tutelage of sporting director Richard Hughes and manager Arne Slot.
Morten Hjulmand is one of the midfielders Liverpool are said to be tracking along with several other Premier League clubs who have their eyes on him.
However, Manchester United are about to gain an edge in their pursuit of the midfielder next summer.
Ruben Amorim to spoil the well-laid-out plans at Liverpool
Liverpool looked at Amorim before deciding to appoint Arne Slot as Jurgen Klopp’s replacement and the Portuguese could come back to haunt them.
There are already suggestions that Amorim’s potential move to Manchester United could push the club into the race to sign Liverpool target Viktor Gyokeres.
Can you name the club Liverpool signed these players from?
The bad news for Liverpool doesn’t stop here as Portuguese journalist Ricardo Granada has claimed that it is now likely Hjulmand will end up at Old Trafford.
He conceded that the Dane would go down as one of the great players in Sporting Lisbon’s history but is likely to move on from the club soon.
“I think they paid €18m for him and he has already doubled his value”, Granada told Danish daily Tipsbladet.
“There is already interest from Manchester United and Barcelona. That’s probably a path for him in the future. He can spend one or two years at Sporting, and then he might move on.
“He is one of the greatest Sporting players and he is the heart of the team.”
Hjulmand has been heavily linked with a move away from Sporting Lisbon for the last year but the club have managed to keep hold of their captain.
However, he is expected to leave next summer and Sporting Lisbon are likely to demand somewhere around €80m for his departure.
