GOAL journalist Neil Jones reports that Liverpool are pushing for the £15million sale of Nathaniel Phillips and will recall Rhys Williams from Blackburn Rovers.
Williams, who stands at 1.95m, was a hero for the Reds last season alongside Phillips as the Reds pulled off an unlikely third-place finish in the Premier League.
But at Swansea City this season, he has made just seven appearances, spanning 392 minutes and, according to Neil Jones for GOAL, he “is expected to return to Merseyside this week.”
Meanwhile, Nat Phillips is expected to go the other way and Liverpool want to make his exit from the club permanent to capitalise on his demand in the transfer market.
Jones reports that after a loan after was turned down from Watford earlier this month, the Reds are looking for £15 million straight as the Hornets tried to get the Merseysiders to agree to an obligation to buy deal on the basis they remain in the Premier League.
Napoli expressed interest but they chose to sign Axel Tuanzebe instead but given how impressive the 24-year-old was last season and against AC Milan in the Champions League this season, Liverpool shouldn’t struggle to find a suitor.
Last season was a fluke and saw Phillips play more football than he likely would have in any other campaign.
It took season-ending injuries to every centre-back above him in the pecking order to get a start but he took his opportunity with open hands and helped the Reds to a third-placed finish.
Fans affectionately refer to him as the ‘Bolton Baresi’ and would love nothing more than for him to go to a Premier League team and succeed so hopefully we can see him get a move to West Ham as we’ve seen him linked with.
