Liverpool once again considering £38M defender for transfer to Anfield

Liverpool have made an impressive start to the Premier League season under new manager Arne Slot, with their defence currently holding strong and yet to concede a goal.

Virgil van Dijk, has been instrumental in this solid start, showcasing his leadership and prowess on the pitch.

Despite the Dutchman’s excellent form, his future at Anfield remains uncertain. The Dutch defender is in the final year of his current contract, and as of now, no extension has been signed.

Van Dijk is the only left-sided centre-back available to Slot, with Jarell Quansah, Joe Gomez, and Ibrahima Konate all more suited to the right-center-back role.

Amidst this uncertainty, Liverpool’s search for a new left-centre-back has brought Sporting CP’s Goncalo Inacio into focus.

Liverpool have been linked with Inacio for almost two years now, but despite their long-standing interest, the transfer rumours have yet to materialize into concrete developments.

The Reds considered signing Inacio this summer but were deterred by his £51 million (€60 million) release clause.

Recent reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo suggest that Sporting CP may be willing to lower their asking price to around £38 million, which could make the defender a more feasible target for Liverpool.

Caught Offside now reports that Liverpool will face stiff competition for Inacio’s signature.

Newcastle United have joined the race for the Portuguese defender, and Manchester United had previously expressed interest in him. This competitive landscape means Liverpool will need to act decisively if they are to secure Inacio’s services.

At 23, Inacio can also provide cover as a left-back, adding versatility to his defensive capabilities. His performances under Ruben Amorim at Sporting CP have been impressive, contributing to the club’s recent league successes.

Inacio’s ball-playing ability and adaptability make him a potentially ideal fit for Slot’s tactical setup.

However, given the protracted nature of Liverpool’s interest in Inacio, any movement on this front should be viewed with caution until more concrete developments emerge.

The long-standing speculation surrounding his transfer means that while he remains a promising target, only definitive developments will confirm whether Liverpool’s pursuit of Inacio will come to fruition.
