Liverpool monitoring United target Jadon Sancho

With Timo Werner reportedly on his way to Chelsea, Liverpool have reportedly decided to look elsewhere for a new star.

According to Miguel Delaney of the Independent, Liverpool have joined Manchester United and Real Madrid in their pursuit of Borussia Dortmund’s Jadon Sancho.

The Englishman has been in fine form for BVB so far this season, scoring 17 and assisting 16 in just 22 starts.

Manchester United have been monitoring the 20 year old for some time now and have been confident that they can secure his signature this summer.

However, Delaney reports that Sancho and his camp see involvement in the Champions League as a priority. If United fail to qualify then Liverpool could see this as an opportunity to get one over their biggest rivals.

Sancho would be an expensive signing for the Reds though and this could be an issue for their owners, Fenway Sports Group. They have decided not to move for Timo Werner due to budget reasons amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

Werner would have been considerably cheaper than Sancho, with a release fee of just £49 million.

Delaney reports that signing Sancho would “require at least £80 million”, as well as wage improvements for Virgil van Dijk, Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah due to clauses in their contracts.

Klopp’s interest

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp is reportedly a huge admirer of the Englishman. He has spoken to the player in the past and assured him that there would be a place for him regardless of if Salah and Mane both stay at the club.

Sancho sees Liverpool as the more attractive option, with the Reds on the verge of winning their first Premier League title in 30 years.

If Klopp is desperate enough for Sancho, then the funds will be there. According to Delaney, though, that would be much more likely if one of Salah or Mane departs the club.

How would he fit?

If Liverpool do secure the signature of Jadon Sancho this summer, then the Reds would have one of the most feared attacking lineups in Europe.

Sancho can play anywhere across the front three, even as a striker. Both Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane will be absent for a portion of next season for the African Cup of Nations.

If Sancho joins Liverpool then the pressure on Firmino, Minamino and Origi will be lessened.

Manchester United

Despite this, Liverpool do not have the funds to compete with Manchester United. When it comes to transfers, United can trump the Reds with their financial might.

There is hope in the Old Trafford hierarchy that if a deal isn’t reached this season, it could still be completed in a year’s time.
