Liverpool midfielder misses national team training but is not injured

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister did not train for Argentina but he will still play against Chile on Friday.

The diminutive midfielder was outstanding against Manchester United at the weekend, breaking up play to set Liverpool up for their third goal of the game.

Since his move to Anfield last summer, Macca has been vital to the side and now, he is virtually undroppable. Alongside him, Dominik Szoboszlai are making it look as though the likes of Harvey Elliott will find it difficult to break into the starting XI this term.

According to journalist Gaston Edul, “Alexis Mac Allister did not train because he has a muscle load but it is planned that he will arrive for the match against Chile and play.”

The £35 million Liverpool paid to Brighton in exchange for Mac Allister is some of the best business they have ever done and the Reds are famous for conducting smart business.

His importance to the side cannot be understated. He is now the metronome for Liverpool, setting the tempo and ensuring they always maintain the rhythm needed based on the opponent.

Against United, he wasn’t as noticeable as Szoboszlai or Gravenberch given their all-action approach to play but it was his tidy ball work and recovery that allowed the Reds to dominate United in midfield.

When he dispossessed Kobbie Mainoo in midfield in the second half, he exposed the United defence and paved the way for Szoboszlai to drive forward before he assisted Mohamed Salah for the third and final goal.

Many underestimated Liverpool before the start of the season which seems to happen every year. That said, the Merseysiders have already staked their claim for the Premier League title and it will be interesting to see if they can sustain a challenge this year after tailing off towards the end of last season.
