Report: Liverpool “making strong progress” on unbelievable signing with “behind the scenes” work

Julian Ward

Liverpool are reportedly making strong progress on a deal to sign Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund with work behind the scenes moving forward.

With the signing not possible this summer, talks are already underway for a move next summer.

The Reds have conducted their business in swift fashion in recent years under the guidance of Sporting Directors past and present with Michael Edwards and now Julian Ward and it looks like the club is looking to continue that trend.

With such a high-profile transfer, working behind the scenes may be the best way to secure the deal ahead of their rivals.

Liverpool making “strong progress” to sign Bellingham in 2023

Sources have told Football Insider that Liverpool are making strong progress on the sensational signing of Bellingham.

It had been widely reported that the club would not sell the midfielder this summer.

Jurgen Klopp has publicly shown his admiration for the player – claiming the only problem with the player is that he wasn’t available this summer.

The news that Liverpool have made strong progress should excite fans as that suggests they are leading the race for his signature at this time.

Who else is interested in signing Bellingham?

The question should be who isn’t interested in signing Bellingham? Near enough every major club has had their name reportedly linked with the midfielder – even if they can’t afford him… (Barcelona) But the main names being mentioned are Manchester City, Liverpool and Real Madrid.

Despite signing Aurélien Tchouaméni from Monaco for €80M and already possessing Federico Valverde and Eduardo Camavinga – Madrid want Bellingham to complete their young midfield for the future. The era of Casimero (30) Toni Kroos (32) and Luka Modric (36) is nearly over and Los Blancos are planning for the present and future.

The pull of Madrid may be strong but perhaps the pull of the Premier League would be stronger for the England international at this stage of his career.

With Manchester City potentially losing key players in Bernado Silva and Ilkay Gundogan next summer (both have been linked with a move away) they will need a new starter alongside Rodri and Kevin de Bruyne.

Bellingham would get the chance to compete for multiple trophies, work under Pep Guardiola and reunite with ex-Dortmund teammate Erling Haaland in a formidable lineup.

Liverpool can also offer a starting place in their midfield, with the Reds also likely to challenge for multiple trophies in the years to come; there will certainly be no shortage of offers on the table.

How would Bellingham fit into Jurgen Klopp’s midfield?

Bellingham would fit like a glove into Liverpool’s midfield, thriving in a three-man midfield in which he would have defensive protection behind him in Fabinho.

Given the role of a box-to-box midfielder, he would have the chance to demonstrate his ball-carrying ability, passing and vision whilst covering a lot of ground.

He could also give the option for Klopp to play with a two-man midfield double pivot with either Henderson or Fabinho as the sitter next to him, whilst Bellingham would be allowed to adventure and join attacks whilst also helping to maintain the protection in front of the back four.

Either way, he would be a key player and guaranteed starter in midfield with Fabinho, leaving Klopp with the likes of Carvalho, Elliot, Jones, Naby Keita and Thiago fighting over the other spot.
