Liverpool talk with “management” of 23-year-old forward over €40M move to Anfield

Liverpool are reportedly interested in PSV’s Cody Gapko, following reports that they’ve held talks with the player’s agent.

Despite already signing Darwin Nunez from Benfica, Fabio Carvalho from Fulham, and renewing Mohamed Salah’s contract, it seems Jurgen Klopp is interested in adding to his attack.

The PSV forward has been linked with a move to Arsenal, Leeds United and a host of other Premier League since impressing last season in the Eredivisie.

Reportedly valued at around £30million (according to Transfermarkt) the forward may make the move over to England this summer as the interest in him continues to rise.

Who is Cody Gapko?

The Dutch forward is 23 years old, six foot two and a versatile attacker who plays mainly as a left-winger, but can operate across the front three.

A homegrown talent at PSV, he came through their academy system and has been a part of the first team since 2018.

He’s featured seven times for his country, and made his debut at Euro 2020, making him the first player to debut at a European Championships since Martien Vreijsen in 1980.

His playing style is one that would fit Jurgen Klopp’s philosophy and after his best season to date in the league, he’s ready to step up into one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Latest Reports

The latest reports see him linked with a move to England, with Leeds United, Arsenal and Liverpool the main frontrunners.

Leeds are looking to replace the outgoing Raphinha, however, the latest reports from Fabrizio Romano today claim that they’re about to sign Luís Sinisterra from Feyenoord instead of Gapko with a full agreement on personal terms announced.

Liverpool have let Divok Origi and Takumi Minamino leave on free transfers, but still boast a strong attack with Roberto Firmino, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez, Luis Diaz and Diogo Jota.

As per Voetbal International, PSV want a fee of “approximately €40M (£35M) for the forward, and despite talks with his agent, it’s unclear where he would fit in this Liverpool squad with its current attacking lineup.

The “management” of Gakpo has spoken with Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester City and Arsenal about a move to the Premier League this summer.

It could result in an English bid-off.

Boasting physical gifts such as pace and power on the wing, built into a six-foot-two frame – he offers a unique make-up for that of a wide attacker.

A natural dribbler, according to WhoScored only two players had more dribbles per game than Gakpo (3.6)

He also managed three shots and 2.6 key passes per game to alongside his 12 goals and 13 assists in only 27 Eredivisie appearances.

Gakpo was PSV’s top goal scorer in all competitions, as the Dutch side fell second to Ajax in the league, but won the KNVB cup and Johan Cruyff Shield and reached the quarter-finals of the Europa Conference League.
