Liverpool held talks over record-breaking move to Anfield – John W. Henry once took him on a private jet to seduce him

Liverpool have held talks with Kylian Mbappe regarding a move to Anfield twice and principal owner John W. Henry even took him on a private jet to woo him.

The French forward shocked the world when he revealed he was not going to join Real Madrid this summer instead choosing to remain at PSG.

It’s not a big surprise given the contract he has agreed to with the Parisians:

  • 3-year deal stretching to 2025
  • €300million signing-on bonus
  • €100m after-tax annual salary
  • £1.9m/week wage after tax
  • Has power to held decide future managers
  • Has a say on who PSG’s next sporting director will be
  • Can approve/deny future signings and sales

If all this is true as it has been reported, it’s clear to see why Mbappe would not be a good fit for Liverpool and why Jurgen Klopp and FSG decided against signing him.

For comparison, £1.9m/week is more than every player at Liverpool earns per month.

Kylian Mbappe

In an exclusive interview, Mbappe told the Telegraph: “We talked a little bit, but not too much. We talked a little bit.

“I talked to Liverpool because it’s the favourite club of my mum, my mum loves Liverpool. I don’t know why, you will have to ask her.

“It’s a good club and we met them five years ago. When I was in Monaco I met them. It’s a big club.”

It was clear from the very beginning that Mbappe was a very special player and Liverpool did their best to sign him before PSG signed him from AS Monaco.

It was a move that owner John W. Henry got involved with by taking Mbappe and his family on a two-hour private jet trip where he attempted to seduce the Frenchman and his relatives into a move to Anfield.

It didn’t work in 2017 and it didn’t work in 2022. Hopefully, 2025 can bring a change of heart from Mbappe although it’s doubtful the player will lower his demands now he has secured a contract worth €600million over three years.
