The soap opera involving Liverpool, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Real Madrid has continued to dominate the headlines despite the Merseyside giants doing well on the pitch with their star man playing a key role in their good start to the season.

Alexander-Arnold has not signed a new contract with the Reds yet and there is an increasing feeling that Real Madrid will eventually pick him up on a free transfer next summer.

Real Madrid have already offered him a mega-deal and will make their official move for him in January if he doesn’t sign fresh terms with the Merseyside giants in the next couple of months.

Liverpool do not want to lose him given his quality and the optics it would bring given he is a Merseyside-born Red who has been one of the greatest success stories of the club’s academy.

Alexander-Arnold recently claimed that he wants to win the Ballon d’Or from his right-back position and some felt that it was one more negative sign for Liverpool.

Liverpool right-backs don’t win Ballon d’Ors – Jamie Carragher

Carragher has been banging on about the prospect of Liverpool losing Alexander-Arnold for a while and the former Red feels the revelation of his personal ambition provides an insight on his future.

He admitted that he was surprised to hear that the defender wants to win a Ballon d’Or over a World Cup or a Champions League but insisted that it was one more sign that he could be on the move.

The former defender pointed out that Ballon d’Or winners mostly play for Real Madrid or Barcelona and his ambition is a sign of things to come.

Carragher is more or less resigned to the fact that the defender is likely to move on from Liverpool and join Real Madrid on a free transfer next summer.

“My first thoughts when I read that was you’re not going to win that as a right-back for Liverpool. Ballon d’Or winners usually play for Real Madrid or Barcelona – that’s where the best players in the world go”, Carragher said on Sky Sports.

“When asked about his ambitions, whether he would pick the Champions League, World Cup or Ballon d’Or, he chose the Ballon d’Or, which I thought was a bit strange or bizarre.

“You’d think he’d pick the World Cup or Champions League as it’s a team game. But yeah, he’s got massive ambitions – and why not? You’ve only got one career. He’s a unique full-back, absolutely amazing.

“I think Virgil van Dijk and Mo Salah will actually stay. But the longer it goes on, I think he’ll move to Real Madrid. There will be a lot of frustration with supporters if this carries on and he doesn’t sign a contract”.
