After a string of impressive pre-season performances, Calvin Ramsay has become the hottest topic among Liverpool supporters heading into the new campaign.
The 22-year-old Scotland international has endured a frustrating time at Anfield since joining from Aberdeen for £4.2 million in June 2022.
In the years since his arrival, Ramsay has made just four senior appearances for the club and has been sent out on four separate loan spells.
However, his performances during pre-season have reignited belief among supporters that the young defender deserves a genuine first-team opportunity.
Ramsay registered an excellent assist in Saturday’s 4-2 friendly victory over Sunderland before following it up with an encouraging 63-minute cameo against Wrexham on Thursday night.
With Conor Bradley sidelined through injury, manager Andoni Iraola currently has only Ramsay and Jeremie Frimpong as fit options at right-back.
Former Celtic star Frimpong has failed to fully convince during his debut season at the club, leaving many supporters calling for Ramsay to be handed a starting role.
One fan insisted: “Calvin Ramsay has to start ahead of every other right-back in the squad right now. He’s very comfortable on the ball, solid defensively, and an excellent passer.”
Another supporter said: “Thoughts on Calvin Ramsay being our new rb instead of buying one? I think he’s been decent tbf and imo he seems better than Frimpong.”
A third fan remarked: “Seriously, what was Slot’s problem with Calvin Ramsay last season? He’s a perfectly competent RB yet Slot treated him like he was diseased.”
One other added: “I don’t know if this is a controversial take or not, but I’m starting the season with Calvin Ramsay as a starter in place of Frimpong. Ramsay had put in a really solid performance against Crystal Palace in the FA Cup, and he got completely sidelined for the rest of the season by Slot for no reason whatsoever.”
Ramsay was effectively frozen out by former manager Arne Slot last season, and the defender has since spoken openly about his uncertain future at the club.
Speaking to Redmen TV, Ramsay acknowledged another loan move remains a possibility while making clear his determination to succeed at Liverpool.
He said: “It’s been good. It’s been really intense. But we’ve all enjoyed it. I don’t know what the plan will be yet but whatever happens, happens. I need to make sure I work hard.”
When asked whether he felt frustrated by his limited opportunities under Slot, Ramsay struck a composed and measured tone in his response.
He added: “Not really. I knew I’m still part of the biggest football club in the world. So even if I was playing with U-21s, I was training with the first team. It was good.”
