Liverpool face competition in pursuit of major signing

Arne Slot will have to play a new backup for Mohamed Salah

Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes and his recruitment team are intent on signing a new left-back next summer as part of their plans to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad at the end of the season.

Andy Robertson is still a valued member of the squad but his fitness has been suspect this season and he has been in and out of the starting eleven.

Liverpool do not want to lose his experience from the squad and plans are in place for the club to open talks over a new deal with his representatives at the end of the season.

However, signing a new left-back has been emerging as one of Liverpool’s priorities for next summer and the club are looking at several players who could come in as a long-term replacement for Robertson.

Bournemouth’s Milos Kerkez has emerged as one of the top targets for Liverpool, especially with the role Hughes played in bringing the Hungarian to England previously.

There are other players on Liverpool’s radar as well and the club are not shying away from looking at talented young left-backs in less glamorous leagues.

A move for Kerkez is likely to be expensive with Bournemouth likely to demand somewhere around £50m before agreeing to sell the left-back next summer.

Liverpool are keen to consider more left-field options and according to TEAMtalk, Sweden left-back Daniel Svensson has made a serious impression on the Reds.

The 22-year-old is plying his trade in Denmark with FC Nordsjaelland and his performances have piqued the interest of scouts working on behalf of Liverpool.

The Reds are now keeping a close eye on him and his name is being discussed in their recruitment meetings on Merseyside.

However, his talent is well known and Arsenal and Manchester United are also interested in getting their hands on Svensson next summer.

Nordsjaelland are aware of the interest the defender has been generating and he was tied down to a new contract until 2027 earlier this year.

There is no clarity whether it has a release clause but his value is likely to be minimal compared to players in the other more fancied European leagues.
