Liverpool eye Inter Milan star for major defensive revamp

Liverpool look to strengthen their options as they are hit by uncertainty at the back. The Reds are set to challenge major European clubs for the Italian stalwart.

Liverpool’s plans for a defensive overhaul have reportedly identified a marquee target: Inter Milan’s Alessandro Bastoni. As the club assesses a backline that has looked uncharacteristically vulnerable this season, the 26-year-old Italian international represents the calibre of player they believe can restore long-term stability.

Why is Liverpool interested in Bastoni?

The interest, as revealed by former scout Mick Brown, is driven by two pressing concerns. First, the uncertain future of Ibrahima Konate, who is yet to sign a contract extension with his deal expiring soon. Second, the need to eventually plan for life beyond Virgil van Dijk, whose commanding presence has shown signs of decline.[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”c78749ece7fd074ea5dc1889e7c53f0f” image-id=”esme3zMajNSk” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2198px; aspect-ratio: 2198/1465;”]

“They’re not sure what’s happening with Konate, that’s still very much up in the air, and Van Dijk hasn’t looked like his usual dominant self this season,” Brown said as quoted by Caught Offside.

Bastoni, the right choice for Liverpool

Bastoni’s profile fits the modern requirements for a top level centre back at Anfield. He is renowned not just for defensive solidity but for exceptional ball playing ability, a trait crucial to Arne Slot’s preferred system. His pedigree is unquestionable, having been a cornerstone of an Inter side that reached two Champions League finals in three years and won multiple Serie A titles.[smartframe_images_embed customer-id=”3ec16c2e89be0acadd2b088db7a33eb9″ image-id=”imbrPbD4cWro” style=”width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 8256px; aspect-ratio: 8256/5504;”]

“Liverpool have been keeping a close eye on him because they see him as somebody who would be an improvement on what they’ve got at the moment,” Brown stated, underscoring the club’s proactive scouting. “He would be a great asset to any club, and one I would certainly recommend they go for.”

Bastoni is a difficult transfer

However, any potential deal is fraught with complexity. Bastoni is indispensable to Inter, under contract until 2028, and would command a fee likely exceeding £70 million. Furthermore, Barcelona are also cited as keen suitors. However, their financial woes could hand Liverpool an advantage in any future bidding war.

This isn’t a move for the imminent January window but a strategic play for next summer. Securing a player of Bastoni’s quality would be a significant statement, addressing the most glaring area of needed reinforcement. For Liverpool, it’s the first step in a calculated plan to rebuild their defence around a world-class pillar for the next decade.
