Liverpool has reportedly shown interest in former Real Madrid academy left-back Álvaro Carreras. The Reds are seemingly looking for a long-term Andy Robertson replacement as the Scotsman has already entered his 30s.
Born in Ferrol, a city in the northwestern part of Spain, Carreras has been a part of both Real Madrid and Manchester United’s youth systems.
The Spaniard joined Real Madrid in 2017, aged 14. He left Spain aged 17 and spent two seasons with Manchester United, primarily playing for their U23 side.
While still with The Red Devils, in later seasons he was sent on multiple loans. He spent every successive season in England, Spain and Portugal as he finally landed a permanent deal with Benfica this season.
Having shone for The Eagles this season, the Spaniard has started 71% of the matches for the club. His performance against Atlético Madrid has caught everyone’s eye in Europe.
Real Madrid, FC Barcelona and Manchester United are all in for the youngster’s services. However, Liverpool looks serious as The Reds are looking for a successor on the left flank.
According to AS, Liverpool has shown the “greatest interest” in the left-back. The Spaniard’s experience on the British Isles only adds to his portfolio of an adaptable career.
Liverpool face stiff competition for the Spanish left-back
However, The Reds are in for a ride to obtain Álvaro Carreras’ signature. All the transfer-hungry giants in Europe are chasing the left-back and this might prove to be a problem.
Benfica didn’t think twice before making the deal permanent with United for left-back’s services. The Eagles saw something no one else could see in the full-back.
Now that both Madrid and United want him back only proves this point. Currently, Manchester United might have a higher standing in the market considering they have a buy-back clause in his contract.
Álvaro’s contract with Benfica runs till 2029 and this will give The Eagles an advantage when it comes to negotiations. There is a release clause in the Spanaird’s contract but the price is not known.
The 21-year-old’s consistency and experience is one of his biggest assets. Having played football in three different countries at just the age of 21 is commendable.
Added to his recent consistency and development in Portugal, Carreras might prove to be a perfect replacement for Andrew Robertson.
With an average full-back declining when he hits his 30s, it is time that The Reds start finding a successor for Robertson. They have shown the biggest interest in Álvaro but backup plans need to be made to rope in the perfect long-term replacement.
