Liverpool recruitment staff are preparing for the possibility of losing Ibrahima Konate whose contract talks have stalled with no breakthrough expected before the summer window.
The defender could leave on a free transfer attracting interest from several elite European clubs seeking high-level defensive reinforcement without paying a transfer fee.
Arne Slot’s planning department therefore identified AC Milan centre-back Fikayo Tomori as an affordable replacement option valued around €35m.
Opportunity For Premier League Return
Tomori’s valuation has reportedly dropped compared to earlier estimates which creates a rare chance to sign an experienced Champions League-level defender at reduced cost.
Tottenham and Aston Villa are also monitoring the situation as the player considers returning to England to improve international selection opportunities.
The 28-year-old has performed consistently in Italy but playing outside the Premier League may have limited visibility with England coaching staff during squad selections.
Not A Like-For-Like Replacement
While Tomori does not match Konate’s physical dominance he offers recovery pace and positional awareness suited to Liverpool’s aggressive defensive line under Slot’s tactical approach.
If Konate departs, the club expects multiple European sides to compete for his signature including long-standing admirers across Spain, Germany and France.
Liverpool therefore see Tomori as a financially sensible reinforcement capable of maintaining stability while allowing funds to be allocated toward other squad upgrades.
