Liverpool could be preparing for departures this summer.
The club have been fine with their squad depth according to Arne Slot. During the January transfer window, Liverpool failed to make any first team additions. When Arne Slot arrived in the summer, only two players were signed on a permanent deal. Federico Chiesa joined from Juventus, and Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia. The Georgian keeper was sent back on loan, and will return to England in the summer.
Liverpool have found out the hard way that their squad needs reinforcements. When the reds rotated the team in the Champions League and FA Cup in the space of a few weeks, they lost both games. Federico Chiesa was involved in the loss to Plymouth, and his performance was bashed by pundits:
“The guy’s got a European winner’s medal. But he’s been an absolute bust today. If you’re Slot you’ll be lying in bed thinking, ‘I hope I don’t need him’.”
The game really showed that Liverpool’s backup options are not up to par to challenge on all fronts.
Quiz: Can you name the team Liverpool signed these players from?
Liverpool eye €50M Premier League star

Virgil Van Dijk could be out of the door at Anfield this summer. The Dutch defender is out of contract at the end of the season. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are also set to follow. The trio have played an important part in the team’s success this season. Liverpool could still win the Premier League, Champions League and League Cup by the end of the season.
With Van Dijk potentially leaving in the next few months, the reds have lined up potential replacements. Football Insider has revealed that Liverpool are seriously considering Spurs defender Micky Van de Ven. The report indicates that the reds could consider signing him even if Van Dijk renews his contract.
The Spurs defender is highly rated by Arne Slot who nearly signed him a few seasons ago. It would take a sizeable fee for Liverpool to sign him if they decide to pursue. Van de Ven cost Spurs €50 million two years ago.
Van de Ven deal too risky
Signing the dutch defender would be a bad investment. Transfermarkt data shows that he has missed over 200 days with injury since arriving in England. A player like that would not be dependable even despite his quality. Arne Slot has relied on his squad’s fitness and reliability this campaign. Investing €50 million into a player who has missed 15 Premier League games this season alone is a bad decision.
