Liverpool could face devastating transfer blow

Liverpool fans have enjoyed watching their team play this season under Arne Slot and the misfortunes of Manchester United under Erik ten Hag have brought further joy to the supporters.

Manchester United eventually decided enough is enough on Monday when they decided to get rid of Ten Hag following a 2-1 defeat away at West Ham on Sunday.

While Liverpool sit second in the table, their rivals down M6 are 14th in the Premier League standings and are now staring at another season of disappointment.

Manchester United appeared to have moved swiftly to bring in a replacement and the club are closing in on appointing Sporting Lisbon boss Ruben Amorim as their new manager.

The 39-year-old was on Liverpool’s shortlist when they were looking for Jurgen Klopp’s replacement but the Merseyside giants felt that he was too wedded to the three-man defence, which didn’t suit the players in their squad.

However, Amorim’s probable arrival at Old Trafford could be bad news for Liverpool as he is not only one of the most sought-after young coaches in the game, it could also spell doom for their pursuit of a long-term centre-back target.

A Liverpool target might now end up at Manchester United

Goncalo Inacio is on Liverpool’s shortlist of defenders the club are tracking as they prepare for the potential departure of Virgil van Dijk at the end of the season.

The 23-year-old centre-back has played his best football at Sporting Lisbon under Amorim and has been one of the best defenders in Portugal.

Liverpool are interested in getting their hands on him but Amorim’s move to Old Trafford could bring Manchester United into the picture.

Amorim is likely to persist with playing three at the back at Old Trafford as well and the club are well-stocked in terms of centre-back options.

Can you name the club Liverpool signed these players from?

However, the potential new Manchester United manager would want more reinforcements and is likely to target Inacio from Sporting Lisbon next summer.

Amorim’s prior relationship with the player will give Manchester United the edge over Liverpool if the race comes down to these two clubs at the end of the season.

The Portuguese coach could have ended up at Anfield in the summer but is now set to lead their fiercest rivals and potentially steal one of Liverpool’s top targets.
